Three reasons to fill your glass with wine

Every wine lover has at least one friend who doesn't drink wine for some reason or another, leaving the wine lover stumped, confused, and in extreme cases utterly disappointed. Befuddled wine lovers of the world, unwind (get it?)! Here are three facts you can share with those who need to reconsider their "no wine for me" stance.

FACT 1: Wine is good for you.

Resveratrol, an antioxidant found primarily in red wine, may reduce the adverse health effects of high-calorie diets and has been proven to reduce the likelihood of cancer and heart disease. And, wine is good for your cognition. In a study done in Norway, women who drank four or more glasses of wine in two weeks scored better on tests than women who drank one glass of wine or less. So how much should you drink to obtain wine’s optimal health benefits? Experts say 1 to 2 glasses a day.

FACT 2: Wine makes food taste better.

You haven’t lived until you’ve had a rich Cabernet Sauvignon and blue cheese, or a crisp Sauvignon Blanc with steamed mussels. No beverage enhances food like wine. How do you pair food and wine? Here’s your best guideline: “what grows together goes together.” Pair wines and foods from like regions, and don’t be afraid to break the cliché “red wine with dark foods, white wine with light foods.”

FACT 3: Good wine is affordable.

Don’t drink wine because you think you can’t afford the “good” stuff? Think again. In the past decade, countless studies have shown that there is no factor that is less of an indicator of the quality of a wine than its price. Thousands of bottles of good quality wine can be found for under $10 per bottle.

If these facts don’t change your non-wine-loving friends’ minds, well, that just means more wine for you…
