According to a new report published by the nonprofit Wine Market Council, millennials now make up almost half of the US wine-drinking population and have the most varied tastes of any generation of wine drinkers.
The study surveyed 1200 "high-frequency" drinkers, defined as individuals who consume wine several times a week.
In 2015, millennials (which the study defined as individuals born between 1978 and 1994) overtook baby boomers in wine consumption, drinking 159.6 million cases of wine, which represents 42 percent of all the wine consumed in the US last year. This is a 13% increase over 2014 numbers.
The study also found that US millennials drank the most wine in one sitting in 2015, averaging 3.1 glasses (gen-Xers drank 2.4 glasses per sitting, andbaby boomers 1.9) and have the most varied wine tastes (citing Malbec, Moscato, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc as very popular among the younger generation).
Well done, millennials! Baby boomers and gen-Xers, you got some splainin' to do...
